The Houston Cougars stormed past SMU tonight after a weather delay due to lightening in the area of two and a half hours that seemed to last all day 45-20.

Houston (4-3, 3-1 C-USA) takes the lead in Conference USA West over SMU (4-4, 3-1 C-USA) by virtue of the head to head win at SMU's Ford Stadium.

The Cougars used the dual rushing skills of Bryce Beall (17 rushes for 87 yards, 2 TDs) and Michael Hayes (22 rushes for 87 yards, 2 TDs) amassing a net 164 yards on the ground for the game.

Freshman quarterback David Piland, starting his third consecutive game after the loss of Case Keenum, threw for 233 yards and 1 TD.

Patrick Edwards led all Houston receivers with 6 catches for 88 yards and 1 TD.

Tyron Carrier excited the crowd with his first kick return for a TD of the season covering 91 yards. He also had 137 all-purpose yards for the game.

The Cougars defense played well collecting three Mustang turnovers (one fumble recovery and two interceptions).

Running back Zach Line rushed for 106 yards and quarterback Kyle Padron threw for 318 yards and two touchdowns for the Mustangs.

Next up, the Cougars travel to Memphis to take on the Tigers (1-6, 0-4 C-USA) that did not play this week.
