Had a chance to visit with Bryant the other day and get some of his perspectives back to Coogfans.
Q. How was spring training this year?
It was really great. We learned about our new system and tried to stop that offense. It is really something else.
Q. What can you tell us about our defense going into the fall of 2003?
I think we will play really solid defense this year. Our line is awesome and I think we could even be a ranked defense this season.
Q. Did you get any chances at catching Vincent Marshall in the open field this spring?
Whew! I'm fast but Vincent has a different kind of speed. When you get close to him you realize how really fast he is. I don't think any of us can catch him.
Q. What is the difference in our defense this year and last year?
By using three linebackers I think we have a better control of the line of scrimmage and can shut down the run better. Also, we can run better QB blitzes from this formation.
Q. Compare this defense to the one you were on two years ago when you played as a freshman.
We have made great strides since then. Look at the 0-11 and then a 5-7 season after that.
The biggest changes I see in the players is our overall team speed has really increased. Some other factors that have changed since then are experience on the field and off the field as well. We have grown together and by spending time with the players we have become closer over time. Now we have a strong coaching staff and we continue to improve.
Q. What about that North Shore connection?
Yeah, we have all my buddies out here from North Shore, and we need to keep them coming.
Q. How many games do you expect us to win this fall?
I expect that we will win them all and the bowl game too.
Q. What do you want to say to all CoogFans today?
Come out and expect the unexpected. We are going to shock all the Cougar fans this year and fill our stadium up.
Thanks to Bryant for taking some time out today to visit with us at CoogFans. He is a speed linebacker and will be a presence at the weakside. Look for him to grab a few sacks on the weakside blitzes this fall.
LBs Bryant Brown and Justin Davis will be on the prowl in 2003.
