Kevin Kolb
didn’t wow anyone Thursday night against the
Tennessee Titans
, but he was better than
John Skelton
.
Despite tossing a pair of interceptions, Kolb completed 15-of-22 passes for 156 yards and a touchdown, compiling a QB rating of 73.3.
Meanwhile, Skelton did next to nothing. Skelton also made an ill-advised decision on the Cards' second offensive play - which resulted in an interception - after being sacked on the previous play. Furthermore, he managed to connect on only 4-of-10 passes for 41 yards, good for a QB rating of just 12.9.
Neither performance was something to write home about and Cardinals coach Ken Whisenhunt still has quite a dilemma on his hands. Even a fifth preseason game probably won’t help Whisenhunt decide who will be under center in Week 1.
Although Kolb’s stat line was better than Skelton’s, he still never looked comfortable in the pocket. In what has become a common trend, Arizona’s offensive line struggled with both quarterbacks at the helm and neither managed to get in a true rhythm. Kolb was sacked twice and Skelton once in limited action.
At this point the quarterback competition appears to be a real toss-up that could be decided in the final preseason game next week. Skelton probably still holds a slight advantage over Kolb but another lackluster performance will likely reverse those standings.
While Skelton appears to be the fan favorite of the two, one can imagine that the Cardinals front office is rooting hard for Kolb, given the team’s tremendous investment in him. Either way, we'll have to wait at least one more week to find out.
