Another chance for Kolb

Kevin Kolb has become the quarterback with nine lives. First it was Philadelphia where he blew a chance to be the starting quarterback and then it was Arizona. Now he finds himself as the starter once again following an injury to John Skelton.

As if the quarterback situation in Arizona couldn’t get any more uncertain, it did when Skelton went down with what’s being called a low-ankle sprain. The relatively positive diagnosis was surprising given that Skelton was carted off the field on Sunday with several of his teammates expressing emotions in tune with a potential season-ending injury.

Nonetheless with Skelton out, Kolb will assume the starting job for the unforeseeable future. And who knows, should Kolb finally prove himself on the field, he may never concede the starting job even after Skelton has been cleared to return to action.

Thankfully for Kolb, he goes back under center on an extremely high note. Kolb came off the bench late in Sunday’s game against Seattle and led the Cardinals on a game-winning drive that resulted in a touchdown pass to wideout Andre Roberts. Kolb was 6-for-8 on the drive, looking calm and poised under pressure.

All of those things bode well for Kolb who has looked anything but comfortable during his time in the desert. Kolb has routinely fled the pocket at the first sign of pressure and made bad decisions time after time. But against the Seahawks, he looked like a totally different quarterback.

Now the real fun begins and we’ll see if Kolb can continue that play in Week 2 and beyond. If he does there’s a good chance coach Ken Whisenhunt will go with the hot hand and leave Kolb under center until thing go sideways – if in fact they do.

Not many breaks have gone Kolb’s way since arriving in Arizona, but this one has. Kolb has yet another chance to seize the opportunity and claim the starting job but only time will tell if things will go his way this time around.
